Throughout the years at McGill University, my teaching philosophy has changed significantly in comparison to my first year at McGill. There are many issues that I believe are important in order to create a productive and meaningful environment for all students.
I believe that the classroom environment has a crucial effect on the atmosphere of the classroom. To create a meaningful environment for all students, the environment should be one that is respectful, engaging, and it should also reflect the students and as well as the teacher. Respect between the teacher and the students, I believe, enriches the students learning as it develops a sense of comfort in the environment creating a positive environment.
Aesthetically speaking, I believe the classroom should be neat and organized since the same is expected from all students. As teachers, we should demonstrate to our students how to be organized and that it is a quality that we will use for the rest of our lives. I think we teachers need to be role models for our students and the expectations we have for them should be demonstrated by us teachers.
Though I believe many of our ways of teaching should be accustomed to meet the needs of all students, I strongly believe that teaching shouldn’t only be based on traditional lecturing but be collaborative and engaging. The classroom should feel like a community where both the students and the educator can all interact and explore concepts. Socialization is an important aspect of education and I believe students can also learn from one another and explore freely. I also believe children should have the right to voice their opinions and ask questions. Questions lead to further questions and provoke curiosity, interest, and engagement. I strongly believe the educator should serve as a facilitator where it is their role to guide the children’s learning through experience and investigation while providing them with the appropriate resources to do so.
Finally, I also believe it is important to encourage and be suitable models to our students. Students, particularly elementary students, look up to their teachers therefore our feelings and teaching strategies reflect their level of contribution and involvement towards the subject we are teaching.
Though there are so many aspects in teaching that are so important, I do know that it is challenging to meet the needs of all students. I believe as effective educators, we must put into effect various strategies and techniques to conclude which is best for our students. It is important to be open-minded and flexible as every year will be different than the previous.
